Unlike most peptides encoded by nuclear DNA, MOTS-C is encoded within the mitochondria—specifically from the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene—and is considered part of a newer class of mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs) that act as messenger molecules between mitochondria and other cellular systems.
